    • Story from Denise Smith Rootsweb - James R. Burress was shot as a traitor to the Confederate Army for leading the Union Troops back from Wytheville Va to West Va to safety.

      The story found in the paper was that he was shot for deserting.

    This story was in the 25 March 1865 addition of the Abingdon Virginian newspaper, it caught my eye because of the story another researcher told of James R. Burress being shot. I do not know if this is the same James R. Burress, this took place in Giles County.
