Melvin & Ellen Pack Anderson Family

Family Group :: Melvin & Ellen Marriage :: Virginia Anderson Marriage :: Lee Anderson Marriage
Census Records :: Ella Pack Anderson Death

Melvin H. Anderson was the son of Harvey C. Anderson and Keziah Holoway.  He was born January 1849 in Grayson County, Virginia and died between 1900-1910 in Virginia or West Virginia.  He married Ella J. Pack 18 May 1873 in Tazewell County, Virginia, daughter of John Pack and Matilda Delong.  She was born 5 March 1850 in Tazewell County, and died 18 May 1933 in Davy, McDowell County, West Virginia. Melvin was divorced when he married Ella Pack in 1873.  Since Virginia Belle was born in 1869, I'm assuming she is a daughter from Melvin's previous marriage.  On Virginia's marriage record, Ella Pack is listed as her mother, so it is unclear who her mother actually is.

According to the 1900 Census, Ella had 12 children, with only 10 still living in 1900. In 1910, it claims there are 10 children, with 10 living. I have found 9 of the children.

Melvin was a Farmer according to census records.  Both Melvin and Ella could read and write.

In a clipping from an 1895 newspaper, there is a possibility it also worked at a saw mill:

May 12
, 1895 Pounding Mill - Mr. Melvin Anderson got his knee badly hurt at saw mill one day this week, and is still confined to his bed.

June 5, 1895 Pounding Mill - Mr. Melville Anderson (husband of Ellen Pack) who has been confined to his room for several weeks, with a cut knee, is improving.

Ella Pack Anderson seemed to be close with her sisters, and be active in the church:

June 26, 1895 Pounding Mill - Mrs. Melville Anderson (Ellen Pack) and Mrs. Fred Quesenberry (Cynthia Pack) attended the quarterly meeting at Lockhart's Chapel Sunday.

July 10, 1896 Pounding Mill - Mrs. Melvin Anderson, (Ellen Pack) Mrs. Jim Osborn, Mrs. John Asbury, and Miss Sallie Maxwell attended quarterly meeting at Jones Chapel Sunday.

April 1, 1898 Pounding Mill - The following persons attended the quarterly meeting at Maxwell on last Sunday viz: Mrs. Melvin Anderson (Ellen Pack), Mr. and Mrs. Richard White, Miss Matilda Anderson, Messrs. Will McGraw, R.M. Sparks and C.P Williams.

It is little things picked out of the paper that make our ancestors real to us, and I am very happy to have found these tidbits in the Clinch Valley News.

January 8, 1897 Pounding Mill - Mrs. Melville (sic) Anderson (Ellen Pack) has been confined to her bed since Monday before xmas suffering with neuralgia of the stomach. We are glad to note that she is improving. Dr. Melvin Crockett of Knob, attending physician.

October 22, 1897 Pounding Mill - Mr. Lee Anderson has gone to WV to engage in mining business till Xmas, but he's expected back this week.

May 20, 1898, Pounding Mill - Messrs. Lee Anderson and John Tate are both laid up with a mashed foot.

November 3, 1899 Pounding Mill - Mr. Melvin Anderson has moved into the Southeastern suburbs of the town.

Melvin Anderson died sometime between 1900, when he was shown living in the Pounding Mill area of Tazewell County, and 1910 when Ella was shown widowed living in McDowell County, West Virginia.

May 4, 1932 Pounding Mill - Mrs. Ella J. Anderson, of Davy, West Virginia, and son Charlie, of Bluefield, West Virginia visited Mrs. Susan Ringstaff on Tuesday.  They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Duggins of Bluefield, West Virginia.
