George Washington Burress was born on December 15, 1883, the last child of 10 born to William and Sarah Pack Burress. In the year 1900, George was living with his mother Sarah, and his sister Ollie, his father William having died sometime between 1884 and 1900. He married Dela "Daisy" A. Arnold on February 3, 1909. In September of that year, their first daughter Oma Virginia was born. In 1910 George was working as a machine shop laborer. At some point in his later years, George and his family changed their last name from Burress to Burroughs.
